Kerala Farewell Feast + Niraamaya Resort Tour – India Part 13 (Episode 106)

This is the final video from our trip to 4 continents in 4 weeks. Chinnu and Abin’s family had a feast to celebrate the marriage, and to honor the attendance of the 4 gringos from Cuenca, Ecuador. Here are a few pics I took (click to enlarge).

Niraamaya Retreats – Kovalam, India

We also wanted to share our experience at Niraamaya Retreats in Kovalam because it was so memorable and amazing. Our beachfront cottage was very comfortable with amazing views of the Arabian Sea. The restaurant and staff were super accommodating and made sure we ate lots of delicious vegan food. And the grounds were so beautiful that we recorded a montage sequence for you to see. We highly recommend staying at Niraamaya if you’re ever in southern Kerala, India.

We LOVED our time at Niraamaya Retreats in Kovalam! Here are a few pics from our time there (click to enlarge).

Cochin International Airport Display – Kochi, India

After we left Munnar, we drove to Kochi to catch a flight back to Trivandrum. The Cochin International Airport is quite the sight to see. It’s one of the nicest, cleanest, most comfortable airports we’ve seen, and we were at 10 different airports on this trip alone.

The following display showing the traditional Kerala costumes was just before the security check. These costumes and makeup are worn during a Kathakali, or traditional Indian dance. Kathakali is a Hindu performance art in the Malayalam-speaking southwestern region of India where we stayed during our time in southern India. We saw a version of this performance at the Niraamaya Resort, which we showed in the video.

Can you imagine wearing all that clothes and makeup in 95 degree heat and humidity?! Click to enlarge.

Munnar India & Eravikulam National Park + Le Celestium Hotel Tour – India Part 11 (Episode 104)

After the wedding, Abin’s brother Basil arranged a hotel and some sightseeing for us in Munnar, India. On our first day in Munnar, Basil arranged a driver (Shiva) to take us to lunch at Alibaba & 41 Dishes, show us around Munnar, and drive us to Eravikulam National Park.

CORRECTION: Several people have pointed out that the religion stats we quoted in the video were incorrect. Our Hindu driver told us Kerala was 60% Christian, 25% Muslim and 15% Hindu. While the numbers are close, he assigned them to the wrong religions. According to 2011 Census of India figures, 54.73% of Kerala’s population are Hindus, 26.56% are Muslims, 18.38% are Christians, and the remaining 0.32% follows other religions or no religion. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion_in_Kerala

We had no reason to believe our driver was quoting inaccurate numbers since he is Hindu and lives in Munnar. We sincerely apologize for the mistake and we certainly didn’t mean to offend anyone.

Le Celestium Hotel – Munnar, India

Le Celestium Munnar India

We stayed at Basil’s hotel, Le Celestium, for 4 nights in Munnar. Our room was very spacious and comfortable, the bed was great, and we loved the view from our balcony. The staff was also super friendly and accomodating, especially Douglas and Velmurugan. And the food was delicious! It reminded us of Basil’s restaurant here in Cuenca: Namaste India. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Le Celestium and highly recommend it!

Lunch at Alibaba & 41 Dishes – Munnar, India

Alibaba & 41 Dishes Munnar India

Lunch at Alibaba was fantastic! For $6.42, we had two main dishes, rice, naan, coffee and bottled water. And the food was delicious!

Eravikulam National Park – Munnar, India

Eravikulam National Park Munnar India

Eravikulam National Park is a short drive outside of Munnar through the tea plantations. We were lucky enough to see several of the endangered Nilgiri tahr (goats), which were hunted to near extinction during the British rule. It is believed only 750 still live in the park, which covers 97 square kilometers.

I don’t often shut off the video and take stills, but the park was so beautiful that I decided to take a few photos.

Walking Tour of Munnar India

Munnar India 25

After a nice walk through the park, we returned to Munnar for a walking tour of the city center. Munnar and the national park are popular with tourists from Kerala and throughout India.

Shiva pointed out the Hindu Temple, Catholic Church and Muslim Mosque on our drive through Munnar and we wanted to get a closer look. Shiva told us the 3 religions live together in harmony, which we noticed in other parts of Kerala, too.

Walking through Munnar reminded me of the pictures I saw in National Geographic when I was a kid. I remember thinking it seemed so far away and exotic from my little Kansas farm town. To be there seeing it for myself was an otherworldly experience.

Munnar India Photo Gallery

The following pictures were taken on the day after we recorded this video. Patrick, Paul, Amelia and I went for a walk around Munnar specifically to take some real life photos. Most people were eager to have their picture taken; only a few said no. This walk through Munnar was the most fun I’ve ever had with photography.

Family, Friends, Food & Fun in Adimali India: Chinnu & Abin’s Pre-Wedding Festivities – India Part 8 (Episode 101)

After a long journey from Cuenca Ecuador to Adimali India via Quito, Miami, Amsterdam, Mumbai and Trivandrum, we arrived in the mountain jungles of central Kerala in Southern India for Chinnu and Abin’s wedding.

This video is Part 1 and covers the morning and afternoon of the first day of the 2-day wedding. Normally, the wedding would last 3 days, but because Chinnu’s village of Adimalathura is so far from Adimali, the family compressed the timeline to 2 days.

We got a tour of Basil’s bakery “Spoon” in Adimali on our way to Abin’s house for snacks and lunch with the family. Then Amelia went to the beauty parlor with Chinnu to get beautified for the evening’s events while the guys went to a spice farm for a tour.

Journey to Chinnu & Abin’s Wedding in Adimali Kerala India – India Part 7 (Episode 100)

After spending 3 days in the Trivandrum area on the southern tip of India, we took a taxi to Adimali in central Kerala for Chinnu and Abin’s marriage (aka wedding).

The drive took about 7 hours, with a few stops for refreshments, food and pictures. We had fresh coconut water from a roadside stand, and we saw monkeys and a beautiful waterfall.

A Taste of Southern India: Shopping, Hindu Temple, Beach Walk & Resort Tour – India Part 6 (Episode 99)

We did all sorts interesting things on our first full day in India. Chinnu picked us up right after breakfast and took us shopping in Trivandrum for wedding and hot weather clothes. Amelia also bought some jewelry for the wedding and a beautiful lehenga dress.

For lunch, we had some delicious southern Indian Thali before heading over to a famous Hindu Temple in the heart of Trivandrum.

We didn’t return to our resort until 8:30PM, 11 hours of shopping and driving, so we turned in for the night and slept for 11 hours!

The next day we went for a walk along the beach near our resort. It was so beautiful and relaxing.

Dinner With Chinnu’s Family in South India // From Amsterdam to India – India Part 5 (Episode 98)

We traveled from Amsterdam to Mumbai to Trivandrum India to spend a few days with Chinnu in her village of Adimalathura India.

After we arrived in Trivandrum, Chinnu and her family were at the airport to greet us. We drove to the Ideal Ayurvedic Resort where we stayed for 3 nights. After we got settled in, we drove the short distance to Chinnu’s village where her family had prepared snacks and dinner for us.

We enjoyed a bunch of delicious Indian snacks before going for a walk to the beach. It was dark so we didn’t get any video. Then we went back for a full dinner with enough food for 6 people! And it was delicious!

Keukenhof Tulip Garden Spring 2019 Amsterdam – India Part 4 (Episode 97)

We hope you enjoy our tour of the amazingly beautiful Keukenhof Tulip Garden just south of Amsterdam. It’s only open for 2 months out of the year while the tulips are blooming so we were fortunate to be there during that small window on a beautiful, sunny, blue sky day.

It was a beautiful place, as you can see in the video and the photos below, and we highly recommend visiting if you’re here in the spring. However, there were a LOT of people so be prepared. We went at the worst possible time: Easter Sunday at 11AM. The best times to go are when they first open or when late in the day before they close, and on a weekday. Avoid weekends if you don’t like being elbow to elbow with other people.

Amsterdam In Spring 2019 + Canal Tour – India Part 3 (Episode 96)

We TOTALLY lucked out on the weather during our stay in Amsterdam! It has been unseasonably warm following an unseasonably cold snap. We barely saw a cloud during our 5 days here! We’re off to India tomorrow!

Lunch at Meatless District in Amsterdam

We spent an entire day walking around Amsterdam with my camera taking pictures (see below). Our meandering through the city had a purpose, though. We wanted to eat lunch at Meatless District, which is a popular plant-based vegan restaurant in Amsterdam.

All I can say is, “WOW!!!” It was amazing! The more vegan food we eat, the more we realize how delicious vegan food can be. Vegan chefs around the world are really hitting their stride!

The cucumber soda was delicious, too! Before I went plant-based, I HATED the taste of cucumber. One tiny piece in a salad or sushi and the dish was completely ruined. I’m pretty sure I could taste something with 1 parts per million of cucumber!

However, about a year after changing our diet, I tried cucumber again to see if my tastes had changed. I still didn’t like it, but it wasn’t too bad. It was tolerable. After another year, I tried it again and really liked it. Now we eat cucumber regularly in salads and as a dipping device for hummus. I still don’t love it, but I certainly like it, especially when it’s flavored with something.

My tastes have changed a LOT since going vegan and plant-based. I like all sorts of vegetables now that I couldn’t stand the sight of before. Keep that in mind if you want to go plant-based or vegan and you’re a picky eater like I was. Your tastes will change over time.

We didn’t see a cloud in the sky on this entire day of shooting in Amsterdam. The weather was perfect. There was no wind. And the city was on full display for this picture taking gringo. Click to enlarge. You want the full effect.
