We live by Howler Monkeys!!! Incredible jungle trek to the natural springs of Dos Mangas (2021)

The Dos Mangas Ecuador jungle trail has been on our bucket list since we arrived in Olón and we’re so incredibly thankful that we finally did it!

I guess we thought it was further away or more difficult to get there, but it’s actually very close to Olón. It’s about a 15 minute cab ride ($5 each way) and the park entry fee is $5. We asked our driver to come back to get us.

You don’t need a guide to hike the trail, but we hired one for our first time to get the full experience, including Amelia’s Peter Pan hat! The guide cost is $20 total.

The hike took us about 4.5 hours because we were filming and we took a detour to get a closer look at the Howler Monkeys. However, it can normally be done in about 3 hours, including 30 minutes in the natural spring cold pools at the top.

We arranged our adventure through Xavier at Bike Spondylus. He’s in the video wearing the Semper Fi t-shirt and he also helped us book our tour to Isla de la Plata. He can help you with all kinds of adventures and day trips around Olón. If you contact him, tell him you saw our video.

Epic Adventure Finally Checked Off the Bucket List! (Isla de la Plata & the Blue-Footed Boobies)

We’ve been wanting to experience this adventure since we moved to Ecuador!

We took the hour long boat ride from Puerto Lopez out to Isla de la Plata (aka The Poor Man’s Galapagos) to see the Blue-Footed Booby nesting grounds. These interesting birds with bright blue feet only nest in Isla de la Plata and the Galapagos Islands, although we have seen them hanging out in Puerto Lopez where it’s easy to find fish scraps from the fishermen.

On our boat ride out to the island, we spotted a pod of Pilot Whales. We thought the tour leader called them Pride Whales, which is what we said in the video; however, Pilot Whales don’t sport the same rainbow colors.

The boat landed at a small beach on the northeast side of the island that was shielded from the big waves. Then we hiked up to the top of the ridge and back down the other side on the southwest side of the island where the boobies nest.

The Blue-footed Boobies are very white and fluffy as babies, but they lose the down as they age and their feet turn bluer the older they get. We also saw some Nazca Boobies, which are mostly white with black masks.

After the nearly 2 hour hike, we re-boarded the boat and took a short trip to a good snorkeling area. Unfortunately, the GoPro battery was dead due to operator error so we weren’t able to film under the water, but Amelia got some good shots from the boat of the turtles and fish.

We booked our trip with Xavier at Bike Spondylus Tours & Rentals based here in Olón.  If you book a tour through him, tell him you saw our video!

Can you get Electric Bikes in Ecuador? Yes! And the Cost might Shock you! (ElectroBike Guayaquil)

During the pandemic, when the taxis and buses weren’t running, we were forced to walk 2 miles to Montañita to get cash from the ATM and groceries from Tía. That prompted a frequently asked question, “Can you buy e-Bikes in Ecuador and how much do they cost?”

In this video, we went to ElectroBike in the Urdesa neighborhood of Guayaquil to find the answer to this question and make a decision about buying one (or two) electric bikes. You can learn more on their website, but some of the info is out-of-date because they’ve been too busy to update it.

We also visited La Central Deli Shop in downtown Guayaquil for a delicious lunch. We were sitting in Mall del Sol enjoying a cerveza when Francisco stopped by to say how much he appreciated our videos showing the beauty of Ecuador.

And he invited us to visit his wife’s and sister-in-law’s restaurant for lunch if we had time during our visit. We really like that area of downtown Guayaquil by the Malecón so we were happy to have an excuse to go there again and we’re really glad we did! The food was delicious and the service was great! If you would like to learn more about them, check out their Instagram profile.

And finally, if you need a reliable and safe driver with a nice car in Guayaquil, we’ll be happy to connect you with Julio. He works for the Sheraton Hotel and he’s also an independent driver who can pick you up at the airport or anywhere in Guayaquil and drive you most places in Ecuador, including the coast, Manta, Machala and Cuenca. He charged us $30 to drive us around Guayaquil for the day, he waited while we filmed our video, and he even helped us with Spanish translations. Drop us a note through our contact form and we’ll send an email introduction.

Injured In A Small Rural Town In Ecuador, and This Happened…

Getting injured in a small rural beach town in Ecuador is a lot different from getting injured in a city with easy access to all the modern conveniences. Our experience with Amelia’s injury both shocked us and made us feel very thankful that we live in such a helpful, supportive community!

If you’re planning your expat escape to Ecuador, you’ll want to read up on all the latest Ecuador Temporary Resident Visa information. There have been several changes over the past few months.

Olón Life is a very active Facebook Group for both locals and expats in the area. I posted our request for help in this group and lots of people responded almost immediately! This group is a great way to tap into the community before you get here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/olonlife

If you would like to be added to Deb’s List so you get the notifications once it’s back up and running, drop us a note through our contact form and we’ll send an email introduction.

Ecuador Cost of Living for Two American Expats (2020)

Amelia and JP VLOG 228: This is our annual cost of living update for Olón Ecuador. We kept track of every expense we incurred in September 2020 and compiled them into this video and this REALLY long blog post Cost of Living in Ecuador: A Guide for Expat Budgeting.

We live a VERY comfortable middle class life on less than $2,000/month in a small rural beach town on the coast of Ecuador. Our cost of living in Olón Ecuador for September 2020 is nearly identical to our cost of living in Cuenca Ecuador for June 2019.

We haven’t noticed any major price increases or inflation in Ecuador before, during or after the quarantine. Some of our expenses went up while others went down, which we explain in detail in our blog post.

Ecuador Long Term Rentals: Beachfront Living in Olón Ecuador

We’ve been living in Ecuador for almost 3 years, and we still get asked if our home has indoor plumbing, running water or dirt floors. We’re happy to report that the myth is not reality. While some of the more rustic, locals oriented homes do still have dirt floors, the vast majority of Ecuadorians and expats live in places that would fit anywhere in the US or the developed world.

The condos that we featured in this video all had granite counters, stainless steel appliances, air conditioners, high speed internet and they’re only steps from the beach. These are all mid-range rentals in Olón, Ecuador.

You can find cheaper rentals that are further away from the beach and lack some of the luxury items for under $400/month. And you can also find really high end rentals for more than $2,000/month that are large luxury houses right on the beach.

Feel free to contact Gabriela or Deb with Inti Luz Properties. If you would like us to send an email introduction or get you added to Deb’s List, drop us a note through our contact form.

Be sure to tell them Amelia And JP sent you and we’ll get a finders fee, which helps us cover the costs of making these videos. Muchas gracias!

What Scares us about living in rural Ecuador during a Pandemic (Olón Ecuador Beach Town)

Overall, we feel safe here in Olón Ecuador during the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, but we still have a few fears. Living in a rural area in a developing nation during a worldwide crisis without easy access to quality medical care is a bit unnerving. We’re doing the best we can under the circumstances and trying to stay safe and positive.

If you would like to donate to our fundraiser to help feed the people of Olón and nearby comunas (and their fur babies) we have some easy PayPal donate buttons on our website: https://ameliaandjp.com/ecuador-food-fundraiser/

Amelia Learns to Surf in Olón Ecuador

Once the quarantine is over, we highly recommend Luis at OutdoorEcuador.com for surf lessons. A private lesson is $25 and includes the surfboard (la tabla) rental.
