Cuenca Ecuador Shopping

Cuenca Ecuador Shopping can be fun or it can be very frustrating. Cuenca has almost anything you need, if you can only find it! We’ll show you where to get things in town and in stores because the locations don’t always make sense to us gringos.

Cuenca Ecuador Shopping VLOG

Miguel Illescas Art Gallery Cuenca Ecuador Whimsical Artwork @ the Miguel Illescas Art Gallery in Cuenca, Ecuador (11/19/2019) - We visited the Miguel Illescas Art Gallery here in Cuenca Ecuador. He is a famous Ecuadorian artist who works with multiple mediums to create his whimsical artwork. You may have seen some of his art along the road to the airport in Quito.
BRA SHOPPING In Cuenca BRA Shopping in Cuenca Ecuador (Episode 145) (10/1/2019) - As you may know, Amelia belly dances and is constantly bedazzling costumes for her performances. In this episode, we went bra shopping in Cuenca Ecuador to find a new bra for a costume she's wearing in her upcoming performance in Quito. They'll be dancing to the theme song from Pink Panther while wearing this costume....
Cuenca Artist P. Maldonado The Art Behind Us from Cuenca Artist P. Maldonado (Episode 127) (7/30/2019) - We've had a lot of comments about the art behind us in our new indoor filming location. This is the story about how we found it on a rainy day in Cuenca Ecuador. You'll also get to see the Cuenca Artist, P. Maldonado, who created it. Since it was a rainy day, we had to leave Lumi at home and film with my iPhone so the video and audio quality is not up to our usual standards. However, it did make for a nice Cloverfield style immersive experience. Several of our early videos were filmed in this style before we got Lumi. If you like this format, let us know and we may do more videos like this....
Cuenca Ecuador Expat Living Cuenca Ecuador Expat Living Day In The Life (Episode 113) (6/11/2019) - We share another typical day in our life in this Cuenca Ecuador Expat Living video. After my morning massage, we had a late lunch with friends, visited an organic shop in El Centro, walked around this beautiful city taking pictures and ended our afternoon at Zatua Miski for a peanut butter chocolate ice cream bar. The next morning, we woke to a beautiful day during the rainy season here in Cuenca Ecuador, so we decided to take Daisy for a walk along the river. Little did we know that a pothole had my name on it....
Cuenca Ecuador Salsa Dancing Cuenca Ecuador Salsa Dancing + Allpafest 2019 (Episode 111) (6/4/2019) - This was an unexpected Day In The Life video! We planned to meet Olesya and Johnny for some Cuenca Ecuador Salsa Dancing lessons in the afternoon, but we didn't have much else planned for the day. Usually, when we go to popup ferias, we only stay a few minutes, but Allpafest was great! We saw lots of friends and ate some delicious vegan goodies!
Cuenca Ecuador Hat Museum Cuenca Ecuador Hat Museum + Lunch at Origami Sushi + La Chakra Mercado Natural (Episode 91) (4/11/2019) - The Cuenca Ecuador Hat Museum (Museo del Sombrero) is a nice place to model some Panama hats, learn their history and see how they're made. It's also a great place to drink a cup of coffee while enjoying the view of Cuenca. Several people have asked us about organic or natural stores here in Cuenca, so we show you two of them in this video. Plus, we had some delicious vegan sushi for lunch at Origami....
Flying High at Aventuri Adventure Park in Cuenca Ecuador Aventuri Adventure Park in Cuenca Ecuador + Shopping at Mall Del Río (Episode 88) (4/4/2019) - Our friend Stephen is visiting us from Denver for a few days and he requested some adventure activities while he's here. Our first stop was at the Aventuri Adventure Park in Cuenca next to the white Turi Church. In our next video, Stephen goes rock climbing in Azogues so be sure to check that out...
Expat Life In Cuenca Ecuador Expat Life In Cuenca Ecuador – Lunch at YuraVeg + Shopping at Sukasa in Gringolandia (Episode 84) (3/26/2019) - Let us know if you'd like to see more of these Day In The Life videos. They're a lot of work to film and edit, but we really enjoy making them. In this video, we walked over to YuraVeg for vegan lunch and then on to Gringolandia and Sukasa. We hope you enjoy the beautiful scenery and the interesting people we see along the way....
Cuenca Ecuador San Sebas Cuenca Ecuador San Sebas Neighborhood + Marc’s Consignments Tour (Episode 77) (3/9/2019) - This day in the life video features a walking tour of the Cuenca Ecuador San Sebas (or San Sebastian) neighborhood. We also stopped by Marc's Consignments, The Museum of Modern Art, a Vietnamese Pho restaurant run by our friend Rick, and a few other colorful places...
Cuenca Ecuador Mattresses Cuenca Ecuador Mattresses: Shopping at Muebles Vera Vázquez for a New Mattress (Episode 62) (2/2/2019) - Even though our rental house came with mattresses, they hurt our backs so we decided to look at some new Cuenca Ecuador mattresses. Amelia still works for a company based in Denver, CO and she goes back for a week four times per year. Time goes very slowly while she's gone and I'm always very happy when she returns! After sleeping on comfortable beds at her parents' house and in hotels for 11 nights, Amelia told me it was time to finally buy un colchón nuevo (a new mattress). We were planning to go shopping the afternoon that she returned to Cuenca. However, after a long day of travel and an early morning flight Quito to Cuenca, she was too tired to go shopping so we went the next day....
Cuenca Ecuador Rotary Cuenca Ecuador Rotary: Mercado de Artesanías Rotary (Episode 60) (1/29/2019) - While Amelia's back in the States, I filmed the Cuenca Ecuador Rotary: Mercado de Artesanias Rotary. It's usually just called "the rotary" by the gringos and it's located at Vargas Machuca y Gaspar Sangurima just one block East of Mercado 9 de Octubre. The Rotary has lots of mostly indigenous vendors selling furniture, metalwork, hand-woven baskets, pottery, kitchen utensils, clothes, bags, rugs, souvenirs, etc. It's a great place to find unique gifts for your loved ones, or obscure items for yourself....
Cuenca Ecuador Pharmacy Tour Cuenca Ecuador Pharmacy Tour and Paying Bills + Beet Burgers Cooking Video (Episode 54) (1/15/2019) - If you've never been to Cuenca or a South American country, you may be curious about basic things like paying bills and shopping at pharmacies. In this video, we'll show you the unusual (by American standards) way of paying bills and perhaps reassure you about the quality of pharmacies with a Cuenca Ecuador Pharmacy Tour....
Zatua Miski Cuenca Ecuador Delicious Treats at Zatua Miski Cuenca Ecuador – A Day In Our Life (Episode 46) (12/27/2018) - We walked right by Zatua Miski Cuenca Ecuador on our way home and couldn't resist stopping by for some delicious treats. But before we went there, we made a few other stops on this day in the life. One of the things we love about living in Cuenca is running errands on the weekends. Instead of hopping in a car, driving through traffic and fighting for a parking space, we simply put on our walking shoes and head out to front gate. It's common for us to log nearly 20,000 steps (that's about 8 miles) on Saturday and/or Sunday!
Cuenca Ecuador Day In the Life Cuenca Ecuador Day In the Life + Velvety Beet Brownie Recipe (Episode 30) (11/22/2018) - On weekdays, we're usually working out of the house, but on weekends we're very busy out and about. We started off our Cuenca Ecuador Day In the Life with a walk to Mall del Río for the annual Viva Salud (Healthy Living) event. However, it was a lot different this year than last. Life in Ecuador is often like a box of chocolates...
Tienda Néctar Cuenca Ecuador Rainy Season Caught In The Rain + Organic Food Shopping at Tienda Néctar Cuenca Ecuador (Episode 23) (11/6/2018) - Today we ventured down to Tienda Néctar Cuenca located in El Centro, one of our favorite organic food markets. They carry a few things like tahini, dates and organic soaps that can be difficult to find. They also get Braggs Liquid Aminos on occasion. After Tienda Néctar, we came back home for lunch and then left again for Jungle Gym back in El Centro on Calle Larga. On our way back home, we got caught in a rainstorm. We waited for about 10 minutes in the ATM kiosk at Banco Pichincha and then under the awning at the Valgus Hotel....
Cuenca Days 2018 Cuenca Days 2018: Celebrating Cuenca’s Independence (Episode 22) (11/3/2018) - This weekend is bustling with activity here in Cuenca Ecuador as we celebrate Cuenca Days 2018. Cuenca achieved its independence from Spain on November 3rd, 1820 and they pull out all the stops to celebrate Independence Day with art fairs, food festivals, parades, concerts and fireworks....
Cuenca Flower Market Cuenca Flower Market + Fresh Tea & Cold Beer in Cuenca Ecuador (Episode 20) (10/30/2018) - Today we did another one of our Sunday afternoon city walking tours. On our way to the Cuenca Flower Market, we stopped by Télicioso Tea Room to get some of our favorite tea. Then, after we bought Amelia some new earrings and some beautiful flowers at the flower market, we went to Simón for some papas fritas y cervezas (we recorded this in March 2018 before I realized I still had high cholesterol)....
Cuenca Ecuador Physical Therapy Physical Therapy in Cuenca Ecuador + Tomebamba Riverwalk (Episode 13) (10/15/2018) - Today, I went for my regular physical therapy in Cuenca Ecuador for my continuing spinal issues. My physical therapist (PT), Karina, specializes in neck and back physical therapy and she's really good at it. She got her degree in Belgium where she had to learn English and Dutch at the same time....
Cuenca Ecuador Shoe Shopping Shoe Shopping in Cuenca Ecuador + Cervezas at Inca (Episode 12) (10/12/2018) - Today, we went shoe shopping in Cuenca Ecuador, and as a reward for my extreme patience, we went to Inca Lounge for cervezas on our way home. We also stumbled upon some improv dueling rappers in Parque de la Madre. You just never know what you're going to see while walking around Cuenca!
Cuencas Supermarket Supermaxi Cuenca Ecuador Supermarket – Supermaxi El Vergel (Episode 11) (10/10/2018) - This morning, we visited Supermaxi El Vergel to get some of our staple supplies like soy milk, mushrooms, apple cider vinegar, crackers, wine, etc. We also buy trash bags, laundry detergent, canned goods, spices, tofu, condiments and other packaged items there. We typically buy all of our fruits and veggies at the mercado, but the mercados don't carry everything and we really like Supermaxi El Vergel. It's clean, reasonably priced and feels like a Safeway or Kroger back in the states. Oh, and the people who work there are all really nice and helpful. We hope you enjoy this tour of Supermaxi El Vergel. We've also included some Spanish language learning opportunities for you....
Turi Church Steps Cuenca Ecuador A Hike Up the 439 Turi Church Steps + Mall Del Río & Feria Mascotas in Cuenca Ecuador (Episode 5) (9/24/2018) - Today, we decided to hike up the 439 stairs to the Turi Church again, just for exercise (yes, I also think Amelia is trying to kill me!). Then we circled around to Mall del Río where we went shopping for a new pair of shoes for me, but we bought Amelia new shoes and shirts, instead. Then we went to Parque El Paraíso for the Feria Mascotas (Pet Fair)....

Amelia and JP

Amelia And JP Ecuador

Following a life-changing event back in Denver Colorado, we took stock of our lives and decided we needed to do something different.

After a lot of soul searching and some VERY tough decisions, we made the choice to sell everything we owned and leave the US in search of a more unconventional life, in a more affordable and tranquilo part of the world.

Hola Unconventionals. A lot of you have been askin Hola Unconventionals. A lot of you have been asking us for our thoughts on the Ecuador national protests that began a week ago yesterday on Monday, June 13th.

Most of you already know that we don't discuss politics. We're not a political channel or a news outlet. We share informational and entertainment videos about Ecuador and moving abroad. So it makes us very uncomfortable to discuss political issues, especially when we don't fully understand the history behind them.

However, if you're planning a trip to Ecuador, you need to be aware of the protests and the impact they are having on travel inside the country.

Most of the road closures are on the highways making travel between cities difficult or impossible. Unlike the 2019 paro (strike), most of the city streets throughout the country are still open.

For current road closures, the Google Maps Traffic Layer is mostly accurate, and the government has a website here: https://www.ecu911.gob.ec/consulta-de...

President Lasso and Leonidas Iza, president of the CONAIE (Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador) who is leading the protest, have agreed to mediation so we're hopeful that this will be resolved in the coming days and the paro will end.

If you have a trip planned to Ecuador in the next few days, you may want to consider rescheduling it, especially if you're planning a visit to Quito, Guayaquil or the coast, or if you have a cross-country road trip planned.

If you're planning to fly directly from Quito to Cuenca or Manta, you may be ok. However, several domestic and international flights were canceled yesterday and today due to road closures around the Quito airport.

Tourism is a huge part of the Ecuadorian economy so please don’t cross this beautiful, amazing country off your list.

The protests will end and there will be a minga to clean everything up and you won’t even know it happened.

If there are any significant new developments or the paro ends we’ll let you know.

Hola Unconventionals! If you're planning a move to Hola Unconventionals! If you're planning a move to Ecuador, we can show you how to do exactly what we did!

We created the eCourse we wish we had when we moved to Ecuador in 2017. We felt our way around in the dark and learned every lesson the hard way. And some of those lessons cost us a lot of money!

So we decided to roll all of those painful and expensive lessons into a comprehensive, step-by-step video tutorial to walk you through the process of moving to Ecuador.

Here's what a few of our students had to say:

"Truly A to Z! Excellent information (videos, text, links to other videos and articles) plus access to amazing resources, and presented ala Amelia & JP style (i.e., intelligent, fun, honest). And the money saving tips will more than pay for the cost of this course." -Gail, NYC

"Thanks for putting together a great course! The topics covered were spot on and very relevant to me. The common sense approach to the material was refreshing. Thanks for what you do." -Brian, Texas

"Such great info and the topics covered were detailed. So many extra links and resources to all the helpful items for making a decision and making a move. Thanks Amelia & JP for putting this together!" -Karey, U.S.A.
